When previews of the original (and, as far as we know, only) production started, the book and lyrics were taken straight from Richard Wilbur's translation, in rhyming couplets, of Moliere's play The Misanthrope.

While definitive information on this show is difficult to come by, it seems that although the book remained largely or entirely taken directly from Wilbur's translation, the score was mostly changed during previews, ending up with songs in more traditional forms.
