On Oct. 28, 1998, Playbill.com reported on the upcoming revival. Rehearsals were to begin in February 1999, with an opening in late April. By that time, there had already been a casting notice in Backstage, and initial Equity Principal Auditions would, in fact, be held by the producers.
On Nov. 12, an article in the New York Post stated that the revival had been postponed till the following fall. Glenn Close, Betty Buckley and Ann-Margret were mentioned as possibilities for Desiree.
In the January 6, 1999, edition of Variety, it was reported that Close was in negotiations to play Desiree, although there was no confirmation from any of the producers. A spokesman for producer Margo Lion would not deny that negotiations were in progress, but did say that "plans are under way to stage a production next season, no casting details are yet confirmed."
This production was cancelled. It never opened and plans have been shelved.
