The infamous Iroquois Theatre fire in Chicago took place during the matinee on December 30, 1903. Late in the second act and an arc light ignited pieces of scenery hanging in the flies. The fire spread to the auditorium and in the end, over 600 people died in the fire when they were trapped due to inadequate fire exits.
