The author of the play on which the musical was directly based, Christopher Bond, directed this production. There were changes to the script and score. These changes included cutting "Wait" and the reprises of the "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" that start "Sweeney pondered and Sweeney planned" (after the St. Dunstan's Marketplace scene containg "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir" and "The Contest") and "Sweeney'd waited too long before."

In 1985, this production was remounted, with some but not all of the same cast, for a run in London at the Half Moon Theatre with the same three sections cut but restoring many of the other changes made in this production.
