Cheryl Crawford was producing theatre in Maplewood, NJ. As the closing of the season at the theatre in NJ, she produced Porgy & Bess. For this production, the cast and chorus were reduced by half, the orchestra was cut down from 44 pieces to 27 and some of the recitative was deleted and replaced by spoken dialogue. Lee Shubert saw the production and arranged for Crawford to bring it to Broadway.
