The White Theater opened in October 2009 as a replacement for the Old Globe's former Cassius Carter Centre Stage, which previously occupied the same site. Designed by LMN Architects.
On June 8, 1979, the entire campus containing the Old Globe theatres in Balboa Park was named the Simon Edison Centre for the Performing Arts. The name recognizes Helen Edison's $1 million gift in honor of her late husband. The gift supported the company's reconstruction efforts and at the time it was the largest private donation in San Diego history.
