The building at 450 Post Street was commissioned as a new, expanded home for the San Francisco Elks Lodge No.3. Designed in the Spanish–Gothic style by architects Frederick H. Meyer and Albin R. Johnson, with assistance on the interior design by Anthony Heinsbergen, ground was broken on 1923-08-25, total cost of construction was $1,500,000 and the completed building was dedicated on 1925-05-27. The assembly hall, located on the 2nd floor, had a seating capacity of 1,000 with a projection room, maple stage, and pipe organ. The January 1926 issue of Architectural Digest devoted 10 pages to the Elks Club.
