Trivia & History

Originally built to be a poor house, it became a museum in 1810.
P.T. Barnum converted the building to a museum and theatre complex in 1841. In 1850, he enlarged the lecture hall to become a 3000-seat auditorium. The clientele were citizens that felt more comfortable going to the theatre at a museum.
The building burned in 1865. The New York Herald occupied to site and Barnum rebuilt his museum elsewhere.
