The third theatre built on the site. The first was in 1732 and is the venue in which Handel premiered many of his important works. Remodelled in 1782 and in 1792. It burned in 1808, reopened in 1809. It was rebuilt in 1846 and renamed. A riot broke out in 1856 and the building was burned. Reopened two years later and was renamed in 1892. It was used as a furniture store from 1914 - 18 and as a dance hall for the troops from 1939 - 45. The building became a theatre again in 1946.
Reopened December 1999 after being completely rebuilt and refurbished.
