The theatre was the second on the spot, the first being built in 1864 and being demolished in 1903.
The theatre was a prime musical comedy house on the Strand until 1938 when it was determined that it needed to be refurbished in order to conform to current licensing. The venture was considered too costly. The theatre was closed and its interiors stripped and sold at auction.
During World War II, the building was damaged during air raids. After the war, a group was formed to rebuild the theatre. It's mission was to once again make the house desirable for musicals. However, after restoration had begun, it was found that the building was structurally unstable.
It was demolised in 1956.
