Based on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Aliss was an all-black modern-day retelling of Alice in Wonderland, with Wonderland being New York City. The familiar characters were translated to 20th century New York: the Mad Hatter was a street hustler, the Duchess was a lusty pizza parlor owner, the Red Queen was skinny drag queen, the White Rabbit was a drama critic and Aliss was a disillusioned black girl whose strange trips take her through mirrored walls and down subway holes.
The show was created by the Manhattan Rainbow and Lollipop Company, headed by judie berke (she didn't use capitalization in her name) and Bill Wood.
