There are two versions of this show. The original version was devised primarily by Julia McKenzie with the participation of Stephen Sondheim. It premiered in Oxford, England, in 1992. The American premiere was the following year at the Manhattan Theatre Club.

In 1998, a new version was devised by Eric Schaeffer, with Sondheim's participation. The first production was in Los Angeles. In 1999, this version was produced on Broadway.

Although many songs appear in both versions, several songs that were in the first version are not in the second, and vice versa.

Both versions are licensed by Music Theatre International.
