Trivia & History

Programs for the pre-Broadway run in Philadelphia listed Robert Pirosh and Joseph Schrank among the sketch writers, but their sketches were cut before opening night on Broadway. The Philadelphia program's title page credited the sketch writers as follows:

MISS LILLIES'S sketches by MOSS HART

Sketches by GEORGE S. KAUFMAN, ROBERT PIROSH, JOSEPH SCHRANK, CHARLES SHERMAN

By the Broadway, only Hart was credited on the title page, again credited with “Miss Lillie's sketches.” The other sketch writers were credited only in the program's list of musical numbers and sketches.

It may be that the material by Pirosh and Schrank was cut before the first performance in Philadelphia as the Variety scribe who reviewed the Philadelphia opening, listed only as Waters., ended his review with, “A couple of programmed sketches weren't given at the opening, which may have been just as well.” The reviewer had earlier mentioned that the curtain came down at 12:17 a.m., after a scheduled starting time of 8:30 p.m.
