In the 1949 musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which took place in the 1920s, the lead characters express their longing to return to New York in the song "Homesick Blues," when they want to see “a show like Sally.”
Initially, Sally was not conceived to be the massive extravaganza it ultimately became. It was first developed as a small, intimate musical and its working title was The Little Thing.
According to Ethan Mordden in Make Believe: The Broadway Musical in the 1920s, the original production of Sally ran for three and one-half years, including engangements on the road, and grossed over five million dollars, a record for the time.
