Ellington was working on this 'street opera' when he died in 1974. Further musical adaptation and development was done by Maurice Peress.

Following it's premi?re in Philadelphia Queenie Pie had a tryout at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C. 

18 Feb 1994 it was given one performance by The After Dinner Opera Company at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Bruno Walter Auditorium.
