Eleanor West is the head of a cosmetics empire. When she dies, she is barred from heaven until she returns to earth and does a good deed, the first she would do. She gets Tess Jackson (one of the company's vice presidents) gets promoted to head of her empire. But, her goodness isn't recognized until she tells Tess that love is more important than a successful career.

Originally planned as a light comedy. It gradually morphed from a play with several songs by Vernon Duke into a full-blown, big-budget musical.
