Based on the play What Every Woman Knows by J. M. Barrie
Set mostly in Scotland, between 1899 and 1906, this musical's principal character is a spinster, Maggie Wylie. Maggie's family makes a deal with a handsome, uneducated young man named John Shand, who aspires to a career in politics, to pay for his education if he agrees to marry Maggie in five years.
Maggie seemingly knuckles down to the ambitious and overbearing John, but it is Maggie who is the power behind his rise to being a powerful political figure, even writing his speeches for him. A potential romance for John arises with a young aristrocrat, Sibyl Tenterdon, but he eventually sees that he needs Maggie more than he had realized.
