Synopsis

Georges and his longtime partner Albin are the owners of La Cage aux Folles, a popular drag nightclub in Saint-Tropez. Albin is also the club's leading performer in his guise as the glamorous chanteuse Zaza. When Georges' son, Jean-Michel, who has been raised by Albin and Georges, brings his fiancée's conservative parents home to meet the family, Albin is asked to temporarily disappear, leading to crisis but finally to a happy ending.

Trivia & History

In various places online, it is stated that Frank Sinatra owned the film rights for La Cage aux Folles, but this is incorrect. Sinatra was sought by Cannon Films and Cannon producer Menahem Golan to play Georges in a film version, and Sinatra was reportedly signed for the film, but it was Cannon that had the film rights, not Sinatra.

It was reported in the press that Sinatra was enthusiastic about the project. He was reported to have approached first Jack Lemmon and then Dudley Moore about playing Albin, but neither actor was interested.

Golan wanted to direct the film as well as produce it. Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein had veto rights over the director, and they exercised those rights.

It was then reported that Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas might star in a film version to be produced by Cannon but not directed by Golan, but that, of course, did not happen either.
