Based upon the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

When the show was in the transition from the LaMama to Off-Broadway, the producers felt the title was a bit "non-descriptive" so they tacked on "Based on the Gospel of St. Matthew" to clarify the plot of the show.  In an interview with Stephen Schwartz, he claimed that he was unaware of any particular reason that they chose St. Matthew, given that the stories/parables all come from the varying four Gospels.
