Synopsis

Just after the Civil War in New York City, a melodrama conflates with ballet when a French troupe arrives to perform, threatening the livelihood of a melodrama producer across the street. He falls in love with the troupe’s ballerina, while her Maestro defends his dancers’ virtue despite their tight theatrical outfits. A budding romance blooms amid rehearsals, flirtations, and a daring ride on the new elevated railway that inspires thoughts of love in Paris. When the opera house catches fire during rehearsal, the producer heroically rescues the ballerina—only for the troupe to face bankruptcy. A bold entrepreneur proposes merging ballet and melodrama into a singular, new art form. Despite artistic clashes, love and creativity ultimately bring them together in a spectacular, revelatory finale.
