Based on the novel The Son of the Grand Eunuch by Charles Pettit
Chee-Chee and her husband, Li-Pi Tchou, son of the Grand Eunuch, flee Peking to avoid his being his father's successor. On the road, they are beset by Tartars, monks and brigands, who beat our hero and carry off his wife, but he rescues her. Finally, the Grand Eunuch catches up with his son and brings him back to be prepared for his high office.
Li-Li Wee, a friend of Chee-Chee's, persuades her husband to kidnap and impersonate the surgeon so that Li-Pi might escape. (Source: Rodgers and Hammerstein Fact Book, edited by Stanley Green, published by The Lynn Farnol Group.)
