Based on The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer from a translation by Nevill Coghill.
Prior to this musical, the music was used as background on the recording Canterbury Pilgrims, with narration by Martin Starkie. E/Polydor 583 008 (S); G/Deutsche Grammophon 139 380 (S) (in English).
"Sit Down Upon My Knee" is the only selection for the pardoner and the summoner characters in 'The Pardoner's Tale" that has been traced. It is very possible there were more selections in this tale, but there were no song titles in the London program when the production opened, and "The Pardoner's Tale" was cut within a few months. As far as we have been able to find, the secion was cut before song titles were listed in the program.
