Acclaimed German-born actress who fled the Nazis after a successful stage and film career in Germany. Perhaps her most famous American screen role was in Alfred Hitchcock's I Confess.

She was married for more than 50 years to the famous Broadway caricaturist Al Hirschfield. They had one child together, Nina, whose name is hidden in many Hirschfeld drawings.
