Rumors of suicide have persisted ever since Mr. Barton's death. They were fueled by:
- Recent separation from his wife
- Mr. Barton let his agent go a couple of days before his death
His family and friends maintain that this is coincidental and that the cause of death was, indeed, heart failure. (The information on the scholarship bearing his name at the University of Texas, where he studied, also lists heart failure as his cause of death.)
