Based on the short story of the same title by John Collier.
Charles is a poet who is sick of the world's lack of appreciation of his work. To escape, he moves into a department store, planning to hide during the day and work in isolation at night, without having to earn a living.
He discovers that there already is a secret society of people living there and hiding during the day. Mrs. Monday is their leader. They are all old people who've lived there for a long time. They live in constant fear of discovery.
The one young person is Ella, a girl who was forgotten by her mother in the store one day. Ella is their servant, treated poorly by them, but she must stay because if she tried to leave, Mrs. Monday would call the "dark men."
Inevitably, Charles and Ella fall in love.
