Trivia & History

A scandal erupted in the musical-theater world over the choice of a leading lady for the NY version. Patti LuPone opened in London and had a contract assuring her the lead in NY. Because the NY press was lukewarm to her London performance, however, Lloyd Webber bought out her contract for a reportedly huge sum, and Glenn Close, who played the lead in Los Angeles, opened in NY. To further stir the pot, Faye Dunaway was announced as Ms. Close's replacement in Los Angeles, but Lloyd Webber eventually announced that her voice was inadequate and closed the Los Angeles production.
