In late 2010, it was announced that producer Bob Boyett had secured the rights to revive Funny Girl on Broadway.
Lea Michele campaigned for the role, even singing "Don't Rain on My Parade" on the 2010 Tony Awards. She and director Bartlett Sher discussed the role in 2011 but as of 6/2011, her involvement was unlikely given her commitment to the television show Glee through the 2011-2012 season.
On June 7, 2011, an online talent search was launched in hopes of finding a young actress to play Fanny.
On 11/03/11, producer Bob Boyett released a statement saying, "We have made the extremely difficult decision today to postpone our production of Funny Girl. Given the current economic climate, many Broadway producing investors have found it impossible to maintain their standard level of financial commitment. Our desire to produce Funny Girl on the scale it deserves required a capitalization of $12 million making it one of the most expensive revivals in Broadway history. I am deeply saddened by this decision, but I, along with the finest group of co-producers I have ever had the pleasure to work with, Sonia Friedman, Jean Doumanian, Stacey Mindich and Tim Levy, determined that this was not the right time to bring Funny Girl to the stage."
No date was announced for when the production might now open. The production was originally scheduled to have opened in April 2012.
