The tryout was to have opened on January 24, 1930, at the Colonial in Boston, but at the last minute it was postponed three days, opening instead on January 27.
Sal was played by Lee Morse during the tryout. Although she received good reviews, she was replaced for Broadway at the last minute by Ruth Etting. Etting had just opened in the Nine Fifteen Revue. When that show closed at the end of its first week, she joined the cast of Simple Simon, which opened three days after the Nine Fifteen Revue closed (and a week after it had opened).
